The Procession of the Mysteries is one of the oldest and most important processions in Trapani. It starts on Good Friday at 2.00pm from the Church of the Purgatory going on for 24 hours through the streets of the city. It is an event attracting a lot of devotees and tourists. There are 20 sacred groups, which depict the Death and the Passion of Christ. They are carried on the shoulders of bearers and every group is accompanied by a local band, followed by long rows of devotees who parade with huge candles as a sign of vote. The floral decoration and the dressing are particularly moving moments taking place in the Church of the Purgatory, abode of the Mysteries throughout the year. Visitors can enjoy an extraordinary spectacle at night, when the Sacred Groups are carried slowly, at a walking pace, the so-called “annacata (rocking movement)”, accompanied by drums and enlightened by candles displaying their shadows on the facades of buildings. At dawn time seems stand still: the streets are still crowded with people ready to accompany the Mysteries towards the church. Emotion and devotion show through bearers fatigue, while all spectators accompany the entrance of each Sacred Group with applauses and prayers.
